What is valerian?

valerian is one of the oldest and most famous medicinal plants. The plant becomes up to 2 meters high and is widespread throughout Europe. Valerian blooms from May to September and has umbels -like pink to whitish flowers. The fresh flowers have a pleasant fragrance. The characteristic valid strap only arises when drying. Baldrian has been used as a medicine for over 2000 years. Hippocrates have already praised its calming properties. In the middle of the age, he was considered a remedy for plague and other epidemics. Hildegard von Bingen appreciated him as a remedy for gout and side stitches. His calming and nerve -strengthening properties were later rediscovered by the doctor Christoph W. Hufeland (1762 - 1836). valerian has a calming, sleep -promoting and antispasmodic effect. It also has a slightly stimulating effect mentally. These forces of the valerian are able to influence inner restlessness, fear and nervousness and to cause a state of balance. Valerian is also effective for performance and concentration weakness.

How does valerian? A drug extract is obtained from the root, which is used to treat sleep disorders and nervous restlessness. The calming and sleep -promoting properties of the valerian root are due to the interaction of various ingredients. The most important active ingredients of the valerian root are the so -called Valepotriates and essential oils. They influence brain metabolism, inhibit the spread of excitation in certain brain sections and have a calming effect. Due to this effect, the valerian root is ideal as a sleep aid.
